Time Travel – The Only One Who Can

Resurrection Sunday

April 17th, 2022

Ecclesiastes 10:10-11

I have seen the business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with. 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.

Colossians 1:15-18

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if someone could go back in time and wipe away the pain from the worst moments of your life? Or, suppose there was someone who could lift from your conscience the regrets and sorrows of your worst failures and choices? What if there was someone who had the ability to heal the hurt in those people whom your offenses have crushed their dreams or chances to love and trust again? What if there was someone who could truly end your darkest and most tormented thoughts, or the endless playlist of personal guilt over sin and shameful behavior?

Colossians 2:13-14

And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

Think for a moment with me about finding someone with so much love for life and selfless power that they could reverse your lack of courage, conviction, and confidence. What if there was one person who could save us from all of our humanity and our lack of goodness and decency?

1 John 1:8-9

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Matthew 10:26-28

So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. 28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

What if you discovered a person who had the power to go forward in time, to make sure that no matter what has happened in your past that your future is secure and will be good? What if that person could step forward in time to make certain that death could never hold you, or that you would never have to fear whatever comes after this life here?

John 1:2-3

In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.

If you found that one person who could travel time into your past and forward into your future, what would you do?

I want you to join me this morning in thinking about a reality in which the time-traveler can alter outcomes and bring ultimate purpose and meaning to each and every moment of your life here and now. What would you ask them? What would you be willing to give or sacrifice for someone who could travel time only to ease your mind, heal your body, and redeem your soul?

Hebrew 1:10-12

You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands; 11 they will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment, 12 like a robe you will roll them up, like a garment they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will have no end.

Astonishingly, I have known that very person for nearly all my life, and yet it has taken me nearly all my time in this life to finally let Him travel freely in me.

The time traveler exists outside of time, before all beginnings and an eternity after all endings.

John 17:4-5

I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

He came from outside of time and manifest Himself inside of it to reveal to all who are enslaved and controlled by time… that He existed. In fact, the time traveler has always existed.

John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Though His time here with us showed us the way to escape and defeat time we were not kind. We wanted His power but we did not want Him – so we foolishly thought we could overcome time by capturing and killing the time traveler.

Though He had released the pain and sorrow of many, though He forgave all mankind of every evil transgression and inhumane offense of their past – their present – and their future; and though He healed the sick and diseased in the blink of an eye, and taught mean and mortal men that to love openly, forgive quickly, to give freely, to pray faithfully, and to speak truthfully in each moment and for each moment – would give eternal value to our earthly time and save us from our fear for the end of times. But we killed Him on a Friday, and they heard Him say it is finished and all of heaven stood still while the time traveler gave death the precise time He said He would – three days. And then just like that He was up and gone. Every uncertainty and unknown thought about time and death now revealed in the resurrected and eternal life of the time traveler.

1 John 5:4-5

For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

My friends, meet Jesus. No, I mean really meet Jesus. He is exactly who He says He is – the resurrected and eternal Son of God – and He is the time traveler – He is the only ONE who can. He is that life-giving, freedom bearing, soul-feeding, living and breathing force that abides in me. He is my person and I believe He can become your person too. Jesus the resurrection and life – sitting outside of time, yet able to heal and reconcile past-times. Is time really a healer – or is Jesus? Jesus, sitting outside of time yet able to prepare and secure our future without time. Is our future bright or is Jesus really the Light of the World? The Messiah, existing outside of time, yet willing to die at an appointed place inside of time so that we might know time without end. Sitting outside of time so that you and I might have our own time passage – life eternal. Jesus the Messiah – He is the only one who can.

Revelation 22:13

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.

John 11:25-26

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?
