WORSHIP GOD AS SAVIOR

Why is it important that we worship God as Savior?  Because, when we worship God as Savior, the recognition of Who He is and His role as sovereign Lord prioritizes how we live life and defines who we are – children of God, and sinners saved by His merciful, loving, undeserved grace.  What does it really mean to worship God as Savior?  What does that look like in every day life?

We recognize that we are sinners. Grant it, some are better at it than others, but nonetheless, we are all sinners. Ephesians 2 reminds us that we are indeed saved by grace and not of ourselves; and just in case any of us lose touch with that reality we so very much need from time to time, the Ephesians reminder is the centerpiece of the Holy Spirit’s help we continually must have – ever moving us away from believing that somehow our salvation has something to do with our personal ability, authority or power. By His grace, He is God and Savior – and we are not, and so we worship God as Savior because we desperately need the salvation He so lovingly provides.

Salvation is God’s gift to us – not the gift we give ourselves. God saves us from our sin and brokenness and through His unmatched love and forgiveness we have a path to salvation through Yeshua, the Christ. Yes, God in Christ becomes our Savior. And, we know that we need a Savior because we are sinners.

We worship God as Savior means that the most significant drama in my life is not what will happen to my marriage, children, possessions, or career, but what will happen to my sin when I repent, accept, and worship Him as Savior. It means that the most wonderful thing that could ever happen in my life is my salvation. It means that the most wonderful thing that I could be called is not boss, or husband, or father, or friend, but “child of God.”

Why It’s Important to Worship God as Savior

This identity defines our deepest, most pervasive problem. It’s the thing that we most desperately need help with. The Bible says it very clearly. Because we are sinners…

God is focused on delivering us “from such a deadly peril”.

2 Corinthians 1:9-10

“Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. 10 He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and He will deliver us. On Him we have set our hope that He will deliver us again.”

God is rescuing us “from the domain of darkness”.

Colossians 1:13-14

“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

God is conforming us “to the image of his Son”.

Romans 8:28-29

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, in order that He might be the firstborn among many brothers.”

God is allowing us to “become partakers of the divine nature”.

2 Peter 1:3-9

“His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us to his own glory and excellence, 4 by which He has granted to us His precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. 5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.”

We worship God as Savior because He is purifying us “from all unrighteousness”.

1 John 1:5-10

“God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with Him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.”

God is sanctifying us as His so as to “purify for Himself a people for his own possession who are fiercely single-minded for what is right and righteous.”

Titus 2:11-14

“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession who are zealous for good works.”

By God’s order and master plan, a plan ordered for His divine purposes, His template for us has been projected into a specific place and time know only to Him for Him. It is a place and time where He knew we would find Him just so we would come to know Him – just so we could bow and worship God as Savior. Scripture after Scripture – line upon line, all there to remind us of our true identity and destiny, and therefore, to reveal to us what what we truly need. While we think “we need” our lives to be comfortable, successful, and predictable, God is willing to compromise all of these in order to deal with our deepest difficultly – our own sin.

When you and I fail to worship God as Savior, forgetting our identity as a sinner, we become completely confused during life. But to the degree that we recognize our identity as sinner, life will begin to make sense to us.  It is often said, “God has not forgotten us.” it is also true that He has not chosen to single out any one of us or our lives for particular pain, cruelty, or abuse. In fact, the opposite is true. He loves us, He is near to us, He saves from ourselves and the sin that will eventually destroy us, and His mercy and grace are continually active in us. In love, He is working on our biggest problem, and He will not stop the working of His Spirit in us until His work is complete.

Being entirely honest, what is it that we most often identify in ourselves as our “biggest obstacle” in life?

In what practical ways can we remind ourselves of our deepest need?

Identify for yourself one way that you can improve at worshiping God as Savior in your everyday life?

We are so glad you found us! At the Reunion Church, we are deeply committed to teaching God’s Word, and to training those who call the Reunion Church their home how to become serious students of Scripture.  We believe God’s Word is divinely inspired by the Holy Spirit and is God’s order and authoritative Truth for our lives today. We study God’s Word in historical, cultural, and linguistic context to better understand the original intent of the author’s writing, looking at what was happening in history at the time of the writing, what issues the author was addressing, and digging deep into the Greek and Hebrew key words to gather the full impact of the passage.   Our Senior Pastor, Dr. Stephen Isaac, holds a doctoral degree in Biblical Theology and is passionate about accurate preaching and teaching of God’s Word.  Learn more about what we believe HERE.

In addition to Dr. Isaac digging deeply into God’s Word in our Sunday morning worship gatherings, we offer adult Bible study classes on Sunday mornings at 9 am.  Learn more HERE.  And, because you are searching online using the phrase Bible teaching churches near me, we know that studying God’s Word is important to you.  We also offer small group Bible study in various locations and days/times around the Phoenix metro area.  Learn more HERE.
