With God’s sovereignty comes all power. The biblical term for this is omnipotence and it refers to God’s unconditioned power to do that which He wills to do in accordance with His nature. We have been learning about God as Creator, and as we said earlier, the Bible unapologetically portrays God as the Lord of both creation and the history of creation. As Christians we know and believe this to be true because all that exists owes its reality, integrity, and continuity to the eternal power of the Word of God which establishes and upholds it.
Psalm 33:8-9
“Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him! 9 For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.” ESV
The end result is that there is no created power which can compete with God. Unmatched and unrivaled, His power and authority outweighs and supersedes over all. Omni-potentia – all- powerful.
Omniscience means God is all-knowing. This means God knows everything, including the past and future. In knowing His own intentions, God knows everything in Himself, in His creation, and throughout history. Scripture often refers to the universality and unimaginable scope of God’s knowledge. What does God know? All of it! How long has He known it? Forever!
Psalm 147:5 “Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; His understanding is beyond measure.”
I John 2:19-20
“By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.”
Hebrews 4:12-13
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”
We must learn to worship God for Who He is. First, “the ancient of days”. He has been faithful and good as our keeper and reconciler of the past; second, we worship Him as “the giver of life and breath and everything” as Lord and Master of our present; finally, we worship Him as “the author and finisher – forever faithful and true”, as the hope and redemption of our future.
We worship Him as timeless – that is to say, God who is transcendent of time, and yet in His Mercy, He is the Creator and Redeemer of each moment in time. God is ubiquitous, permeating everywhere – time, space, and matter. And believe me, it matters. For when you or I need the transforming and life- altering presence of a sovereign power capable of saving a life, healing a life, redeeming a life, rebuilding a life, re-inventing a life, re-ordering and remaking a life, we need a God who is immanent and sovereignly present in every intimate detail and concern of our lives. He is therefore uniquely qualified and and even intent on changing who we were, into who we are, into order that we might become His righteousness – our Creator present, He is Immanent.
Revelation 1:4-8
Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, 6 and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 7 Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. 8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. NRSV
Here is one to wrap your mind around. God is both present and pervasive, permeating in all things – that is to say, He is immanent, transcendent, moving, righteously intent on changing us and our circumstances to remake and renew us. How is it then that He is also perpetual, permanent, and unchangeable? The answer of course is, because He is Sovereign – and we need Him to be.
What that means in your life and mine is this:
When we need God’s unchanging and steady hand, He is there to provide the stability and steadiness that our lives often lack during unstable, chaotic, and unsteady circumstances of life – He is immutable.
Immutability means that God is unchangeable and thus unchanging. This does not mean that He is immobile or inactive, but it does mean that He is never inconsistent or growing or developing. I clearly remember the words to an old Roy Acuff song…
“Hold to God’s unchanging hand, Hold to God’s unchanging hand; Build your hopes on things eternal, Hold to God’s unchanging hand.”
And then of course one cannot overlook the profound insights of St. Augustine, who wrote in his Confessions…
For altogether, as Thou art, Thou only knowest; Who art unchangeably, and knowest unchangeably, and willest unchangeably. And Thy Essence Knoweth, and Willeth unchangeably; and Thy Knowledge Is, and Willeth unchangeably; and Thy Will Is, and Knoweth unchangeably. Nor seemeth it right in Thine eyes, that as the Unchangeable Light knoweth Itself, so should it be known by the thing enlightened, and changeable. Therefore is my soul like a land where no water is, because as it cannot of itself enlighten itself, so can it not of itself satisfy itself. For so is the fountain of life with Thee, like as in Thy light we shall see light.
The truth is this – as we learn to worship the Sovereign Creator we will readily discover that He is paradoxical in that He is ALL THINGS AND BEFORE ALL THINGS AND IN HIM ALL THINGS CONSIST AND HAVE THEIR BEING. So we bow down and we worship Him. It makes no sense for us to fight the very source of our existence and the salvation of our being, and yet we do. Time to stop the resistance and even arrogance if you will. Time to worship God as Sovereign.
Psalm 91:1-16
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” 3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. 5 You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday. 7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. 8 You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked. 9 Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place— the Most High, who is my refuge— 10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent. 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. 12 On their hands they will bear you up, lestyou strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot. 14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. 15 When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. 16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”
Deuteronomy 31:5-8
The LORD will deliver them up before you, and you shall do to them according to all the commandments which I have commanded you. 6 “Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the LORD your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.” 7 Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which the LORD has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance. 8 “The LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” NASB
